AR-15 Holographic Sights:
EOTech Holographic Weapon Sights
Holographic sights are a form of Red Dot Reflex scope. They differ in the respect they lack the tube of a typical rifle scope or dot scope. With Holographic sites there is no concern for eye relief and the sight can be mounted anywhere along the length of the firearm. Holographic sights are designed for the fastest target acquisition possible. These sights have no built in magnification. Magnification is available with the utilization of add-on magnifiers. If you plan on utilizing Night Vision be sure you select a model that's compatible.
Side Note: The reticles do not actually appear like what is shown on the various web sites. Those are graphical representations. The image of the 557-AR223 below is an actual image. The very first time you use your Eotech you might suspect something is wrong with it. Here's what you need to do.
- Shoot with both eyes open
- Focus on the target and not the reticle
- Lower the brightness to prevent the reticle from blooming or it will just appear as a blob and have no definition. Set the brightness for the job at hand. On a bright summer day about 3 clicks should be all that you need.
If you still cant view it correctly it might be a problem with your eyes you aren't aware you have.
EOTech HOLOgraphic Weapon Sight HWS 557.AR223 has been developed to optimize the functionality of the EOTech HWS. The buttons have been moved from the back to the left side for instant access, allowing a magnifier, night vision, or a back up iron sight to fit closely to the Eotech HWS body. This button position allows the user to operate the EOTech HWS function switches easier than ever before. This allows for NV devices and magnifiers to be mounted right up behind the HWS without interfering with access to the brightness controls. Additionally, a portion of the front base has been raised to allow the sight to fit over standard hand guards found on many M-4 or M-16 style weapons. The L3 EOTech 557.AR223 Holographic Weapon Sight is configured with a new ballistic matching reticle image for the M4 carbine. The battle tested circle/dot reticle will be offered along with a series of 1 MOA aiming dots that are vertically aligned and calibrated specifically for the ballistic drop of .223 caliber ammunition. The reticle provides 4 aiming dots for target distances of 0-300m, 400m, 500m, and 600m. This sight is similar to Eotech 552, but features the control buttons on the left side of the sight. The 557 is available with the M4 Bullet-Drop-Compensating Reticle for use with either of EOtech magnifiers.
I like this particular model for several reasons. The EOTech 552 operates on AA batteries rather than the harder to find and more expensive "N" type batteries. Additionally the 552 is night vision compatible. Best of all its one of the least expensive (cheapest) EOTech's available
The Model 512 is fast becoming the most popular model HWS. This tactical optic is perfect for agencies that want the best in CQB speed and versatility, without the need for night vision compatibility.
- AA Battery model (supports Lithium and Alkaline)
- 65 MOA circle with 1 MOA aiming dot reticle pattern
- Includes rugged aluminum hood assembly and knobbed, tool-less mounting bolt
- Interfaces to standard 1 inch Weaver dovetail / Picatinny rail
The new 517.A65 has been developed to optimize the functionality of the HWS. The buttons have been moved from the back to the left side for instant access, allowing a magnifier or a back up iron sight to fit closely to the HWS body. This new button position allows the user to operate the HWS function switches easier than ever before. Additionally, a portion of the front base has been raised to allow the sight to fit over standard hand guards found on many M-4 or M-16 style weapons
